Job Description

THIS IS A CONTRACT POSITION UNTIL MAY 2024 supporting TED with TED2024 being held in Vancouver in April 2024. This position is remote and open to candidates in Canada and the US with travel to Vancouver required for the conference. 

The Event Operations team is responsible for the overall production of live conference events for TED and is seeking a Security Consultant to join the team.  You will have substantial working knowledge and experience in the events industry, a flair for project management and strategic thinking, a curiosity for innovation, and a passion for excellence.

The Security Consultant will support the Event Operations team in the development of security plans, schedules, planning and training documents, and leading meetings, briefings and training as needed. This role requires the incumbent to work cross-functionally with multiple stakeholders, TED representatives, and vendors to ensure the health, safety, and security of attendees, staff, and stakeholders onsite. This is a pre-conference, onsite and post-conference role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct research to identify security, biosafety, and emergency service vendors, including security firms, executive protection agencies, medics, and medical doctors.
  • Handle all administrative tasks related to third-party vendors, including contracting, invoicing, and onsite coordination and execution.
  • Develop briefing, planning documents, and onsite security protocols, along with risk communication, mitigation, and assessment plans.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement, venue security representatives, and selected security providers to establish onsite safety protocols and address potential risks and security issues.
  • Create security plans and deployment schedules tailored to the conference needs, involving input from external stakeholders.
  • Assist with the coordination of external executive protection details and additional security requirements for high-profile guests.
  • Work closely with the health and safety administrator to ensure compliance with biosafety and Covid-19 guidelines and protocols.
  • Arrange onsite medical services, including ambulances, medics, and doctors.
  • Maintain communication with venues for purchase orders, early access lists, entry and accreditation protocols, and opening/closing of the conference and load-in days.
  • Manage access and overnight access requests.
  • Collaborate with TED Theater Usher team to oversee the coordination of session openings and closings.
  • Provide onsite coordination, oversight, and quality control.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Security Management, Risk Assessment, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as an Event Security Consultant or in a similar security leadership role for high-profile events.
  • In-depth knowledge of event security best practices, risk assessment methodologies, and emergency response planning.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with stakeholders, vendors, and team members.
  • Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions under pressure.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including planning, organization, and coordination.
  • Certification in relevant security fields (e.g. CPP, PSP, CISSP) is highly desirable.
